Reflection

Overall, i consume a lot of media. I use social media multiple times a day everyday. This has ultimately helped me to stay in contact with friends, especially family and friends in other countries, because my mom's side of the family lives in ireland, and media helps me to stay connected to them when we arent visiting. Unfortunately, media has also proved to be a huge distraction, especially with school. My phone is always there when im doing homework, and it is always there when im with people or just doing anything. It is always distracting me from what im supposed to be doing, often making me forget what i was originally doing.
i have never really paid much attention to advertisements, but there were always those few that would pop out when it was something that i really wanted or i thought was fun. But after taking Critical Thinknng ive noticed a lot of different techniques that the sellers use to try and entice you into buying their products. For example, there is one trend that is all over social media at the moment for a sticky bra called the Lala Bra. It tries to tell the target market audience that this bra will make their boobs seem bigger and it will enhance their curves if they use it. So many different people have bought it believing that it will be true. Without this class i would never have thought of any of the different things these producers are trying to do or say when getting people to buy their products, it has made me think a lot more when seeing different advertisments everywhere.
I do not think that my media consumption habits have changed all that much. I have definitely tried to make media less of a distraction for myself, as i know it is not something that i need to be connected to all the time. When i went camping for 4H, they do not have any reception, so no one was able to be on their phones. I honestly think that it was great just to be out there without any distractions and being able to just have conversations with people, and appreciate how pretty the night sky was and the amount of stars that there were. Just being out there looking at the sky trying to find different constellations with friends was so refreshing. it makes me wish that people could be less reliant on media as a form of entertainment when they dont know what to do and be able to engage themselves in a conversation.
i think it is important to be an educated consumer because producers have an ultimate goal, and that is to make money, and so if they think that if they tell you what you want to hear, that is exactly what they will do. They want people to buy their product to make them, safer or prettier or more popular, ect. It is their job to convince you to buy things. media literacy helps you be able to recognize when companies are doing this, so people do not end up buying a bunch of different things they will never use again, because the reality of the product is not the same as what they thought when they bought it.
