Original or Stolen Ideas?
Snapchat has always been one of the most popular social medias I know of. So has instagram. A while ago Snapchat created an update for their app making it so you can post something on your "Snapchat story" that allows everyone in your contacts to see it and it stays up for 24 hours. This became a huge thing, and some people hated it passionately, while others loved it, but ultimately it was a huge hit. A short time after Snapchat introduced this new update, instagram came up with something extremely similar. They created a new update called Instagram stories, that appear at the top of your feed from different accounts where you can post something for any of your followers to see, that will disappear after 24 hours. This reminds me of Merchants of Cool, as it was talked about that when some type of trend takes off within the teen community, almost instantly other companies and producers will pounce on that idea so they can keep up with the cool. But "cool" is everchanging, so companies do anything they can to keep up with it. Instagram would be an example of using another companies techniques to keep up with what is trending.
I believe Instagram and Snapchat did this because they realized the massive attraction that people have to both apps so instead of having someone have both a Snapchat and an Instagram, they wanted to combine both. That way, the person does not have to leave Instagram to see someone else's "story" and the person does not have to leave Snapchat to see the picture someone took 3 weeks ago. Even though the memories feature did not hurt Snapchat, it somewhat backfired for Instagram because since the days of its release, it has basically become an advertising for snapchat accounts. Either way, Snapchat came up victorious with the use of this tactic.
