A Constant Distraction
Media has had a huge effect on my life. I have been surrounded by it since i was very little, and it has basically become a part of my life today. Media can in fact be very helpful, for example, I use it to keep me updated with the news. Without media, I would be very unknowing to what is going on around the world. Media can has also had its negatives. Especially social media. It has become a huge distraction for me, especially with school. Instead of doing my homework, when i have a small break in whatever I'm doing, i end up just going on Instagram, or Snapchat. In the end the time added up to how long spent actually working on schoolwork and on social media, the social media is much longer than the time i spent working on school. I talk to some of my friends so i know that they have the same problem but it makes me think, social media is somewhat like an addiction. It always there, and whenever people get the chance to go on it, they take it. When i first started using social media, it most definitely something that was not as prominent in my life. But as i have grown older, Instagram, and Snapchat ,(and im sure many others but those are the two i use) have updated themselves to make them more appealing, and easier to get sucked into. INstagram and Snapchat have both added these things called stories, whcih allows you to post something that dissappears after 24 hours, and allows anyone who follows you or is your friend to view it. This is more of a distraction for me on Snapchat, because it is something that allows me to look at stuff of people that i do not really talk to on the daily. Snapchat has also added newsfeeds. These are little boxes you can click on that will update you on the lives of celebrities, worldnews, or just even random stories that people write on what is big in the media right now. They are almost like digital Newpapers, but what is being posted isn't neccessarily very important stuff. Dont get me wrong some of it is, but the majority of what i see on Buzzfeed, or Daily Mail, iscompletely useless information. Instagram has also been updated so that pictures or accounts that other people follow that you follow, will pop up on your feed, as an attempt to bring you even deeper into their grasp. For example, my sister has started following a lot of makeup artists and photographers, and pictures they post will pop up on my feed, almost as if Instagram is hoping we have similar interests. Instagram even has sections of different posts based on different posts youve "liked" or different accounts you follow", making it even more enticing. It is things like these that make social media so distracting, there is so much going on, and people tend to have this need to always be entertained by something. Media provides that entertainment. By changing themselves in these ways, Snapchat and Instagram make themselves even more attractive, and they take up more of peoples' time, including mine, everyday.
