Examining the Language

The article I chose consists of the pros and cons of getting an abortion. While reading through the pro-choice argument, I noticed that when describing abortions, the author always used words like "fetus" and "embryo". This word choice was used to convince the reader that what is growing inside of that uterus is not human yet. It is meant to make the abortion seem less like the murder that the pro-life argument says it is. It makes the fetus seem like an object inside of the woman rather than something that could eventually turn into a baby boy or girl, attempting to make the readers feel less guilty for siding with pro-choice. The author also uses phrases like "termination of the pregnancy" also attempting to convince those who are on the fence or who agree with pro-life that abortions are not murder. Another thing i noticed in the pro-choice argument was in Pro 4, and the author was laying out an argument that fetuses cannot feel pain during abortions, following up with a line stating "...fetuses probably can't feel pain until the 29th or 30th week of gestation. The key word in this sentence is "probably". The author lists out facts and statistics about fetuses developing a frontal cortex, which is where pain is perceived, then saying "probably". It seems though the author would be right and many people might miss that one single word that says they are not completely positive about the line that comes after it. In Pro 8 we read about birth defects, and the fact that it would be "cruel to force women to carry fetuses with fatal congenital defects to term." The key word in this sentence being "force". By using a word like force, the author is attempting to show us the negative side of the pro-life argument, that it is more of anti-choice, taking way a womens' choice to bring another being into the world.
The pro-life argument on the other hand, we can see the author uses language such as "unborn baby" or "child" as oppose to "fetus" and "embryo. The author uses language like this to help convince the readers that abortion is basically the murder of a tiny unborn baby. It humanizes the undeveloped cells implanted in the uterus, making those who may want to side with pro-choice feel guilty. in Con3 when it is being addressed whether the fetus can feel pain or not, it is quoted that " I would assume that there will be pain caused to the fetus. " The words "i would assume" show that they are not sure if the fetus would feel pain or not. They attempt to make you believe this by quoting doctors, but it is not actually factual evidence. In Con9 we see the author describe abortions as a "convenience" or and "insurance policy". This is an attempt to make it seem like something that will happen all the time and that people will just do it because they can. The author also described abortions as allowing human life to be seen as "disposable". This is an attempt again to emphasize the murder aspect of abortions and possibly even to make the readers believe that the more people there are getting abortions, the more people there will be with a disregard for human life.
